Community College Services Unit

The Community College Services Unit was established in 1966 with the passing of the Community College Act.  Over the years, a partnership has been formed between the office and community colleges throughout the state.  The major purpose of the office is to provide technical assistance to those  community colleges receiving Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Applied Technology grants.  These funds provide the community colleges* within the state the opportunity to improve occupational programs by supporting professional development activities, purchasing up-to-date equipment, improving curriculum, and providing support services.  The major thrust of this federal legislation is to help students prepare for employment in current or emerging occupations requiring less than a bachelor's degree.

Staff members work continuously with individual colleges, the Michigan Community College Association  as well as several statewide committees and organizations to ensure the development of the academic, occupational, and technical skills of community college students who elect to enroll in occupational education programs.  The unit has been instrumental in supporting the development of the Michigan Technical Education Centers.  It has also been active in supporting state-wide conferences and workshops that focus upon community college issues.   As the role of the community college, itself, has expanded over the years in a continuous effort to strengthen  Michigan's workforce , so has the role of the Community College Services Unit.

Best Practice Pic The work being done by community colleges throughout the State often goes unrecognized.  This part of the website highlights the good work that is being done every day at Michigan community colleges.  Please click on the Best Pratice Series icon to view the best practices that have been hightlighted since 2005.  Given time and resources, all colleges will eventually be represented since each has something valuable and unique to offer.
